" AUSTRALIA IN THE CONTEXT
OF A SUSTAINABLE ASIA:
Corporate Governance
and the Challenge of the World Summit for Sustainable Development"

The Forum was opened by the Minister for
Environment and Heritage, The Hon. Dr David Kemp MP. The Forum
presented an opportunity to hear from some of the world’s
leading proponents of sustainable development including Professor
Dr Emil Salim, UN Bureau for World Summit and former Minister
for Environment; H L Kam, CEO of CK Life Science Int’l;
Chandran Nair, CEO ERM Asia – Pacific; Professor Akio
Morishima, Chairman, Board of Directors, Institute for Global
Environmental Strategies, Japan and Bjorn Stigson, CEO, World
Business Council for Sustainable Development and Leigh Clifford,
Chief Executive, Rio Tinto Limited.
Kofi Annan has stated: 'Good governance at the
local, national and international levels is perhaps the single
most important factor in promoting development and advancing
the course of peace.' The Melbourne forum looked at the implications
of the outcomes of the World Summit on Sustainable Development
held in Johannesburg, 2002 in the context of Asia and focused
on how Asian and Australian businesses can contribute to sustainability
by adopting modes of corporate governance that judiciously
balance economic, environmental and social factors.
