Richard Armitage was sworn in as Deputy Secretary of
State on 26 March 2001. He has had great experience in international affairs over many years. He has travelled extensively over the last two years as President Bush’s special envoy including to China, India, Pakistan and
Japan. Mr Armitage has a long standing interest in
Australia and will be participating in the Australian-
American Leadership Dialogue which will be held in
Melbourne later in August.

From 1993 to 2001 Mr Armitage was engaged in a range of business and public policy endeavours for Armitage Associates. Previously he held senior troubleshooting and negotiating positions in the Departments of State and Defense and the Congress. These positions included Special Emissary to Jordan’s King Hussein during the 1991 Gulf War for President Bush and Presidential Special Negotiator for the Philippines Military Bases Agreement and Special Mediator for Water in the Middle East. From 1981 until 1983 he was Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for East Asia and Pacific Affairs. Mr Armitage served in the US Navy and saw active service in Vietnam.

The Luncheon will be organised with the support of the American Chamber of Commerce in Australia, the Australian Institute of International Affairs (AIIA), the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and the Consulate-General of the United Staes of America (NSW).
