year ended 30 June 2006.
The importance of broadening mutual understanding and developing closer relationships, particularly at the decision maker level, between Australia and the countries within the Asian region has never been greater.
Major developments in the region during the year of which the Centre needed to take account included Australia’s attendance at the first East Asian Summit in Kuala Lumpur in December, following the government decision to sign the ASEAN Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC), continuing strong economic growth in China and India and their increasing influence in the Asia Pacific region, as well as consolidating cooperation in a number of areas, including action to combat terrorism in Southeast Asia. Vietnam appointed a new President, Nguyen Minh Triet and a new Prime Minister, Nguyen Tan Dung in June. In the previous year we entertained the Prime Minister’s predecessor, Phan Van Khai...
